At some point every women will go through menopause. While for some, symptoms will be minimal and menopause may seem like a non-event for many women menopause can bring on a period of changes and unpleasant symptoms. So, how can our Alpharetta, GA, OBGYNs help you alleviate these symptoms?

Tests aren’t really necessary to determine whether you are going through menopause; however, in certain circumstances one of our Alpharetta, GA, gynecologists may recommend a blood test to check your follicle-stimulating hormone, estrogen and thyroid-stimulating hormone to make sure that your symptoms are due to menopause and not from other health issues such as an underactive thyroid.

Since menopause is a normal change that occurs in all women there isn’t any way to stop it from happening; therefore, the treatments we offer will focus on managing your symptoms until menopause is over. Some of these treatment options may include:

Hormone Therapy

This is the most common treatment option used to treat menopause symptoms, particularly hot flashes. Before providing you with hormone therapy we will need to go through your medical history and discuss your current health status to determine whether estrogen therapy is the right option for alleviating your symptoms.

Since your body isn’t producing estrogen anymore it can be beneficial to your health to supplement with a low dose of estrogen, which won’t just manage your symptoms but can also reduce your risk for osteoporosis (bone loss). We can discuss the type of hormone therapy that is right for you during your consultation.

Vaginal Estrogen

While some women experience hot flashes or night sweats, there are other women who experience vaginal dryness and pain during sex. If this is something you’re experiencing then our OBGYN might prescribe a vaginal estrogen, which can come in the form of an oral medication, vaginal ring or cream.

There are other types of prescription medications that may be prescribed to combat hot flashes and other symptoms, particularly if you are unable to get hormone therapy due to health reasons. We will sit down with you and talk about your options, as well as the benefits and risks associated with each treatment, so you can make an informed decision about how to manage your menopause symptoms.
